Art needs space to unfold

Ateliers für die Kunst e.V. is an association that supports visual artists in Hamburg. The association’s activities include providing advice and information about studio spaces, grants, and other developments in cultural policy.

The corporate design is based on geometric, colored design elements that relate to one another in a modular way. Their arrangement and structure evoke folded, layered surfaces that both enclose and open up space. In this way, a visual system emerges that translates the central message “Art needs space to unfold” into imagery.

The geometric design elements are inspired by architectural floor plans and can be combined in a variety of ways. As modular design components, they illustrate the central role of space in the context of artistic production.

The elements interact with one another as well as with typographic and visual content, which is at times expansive, at times restrained. Their proportions contrast with each other, creating a dynamic and tension-filled composition. In animation, they are set into a calm, swaying motion.
